Experience

1998. Started using visualisation in my preparation for every flight while training to become a pilot in the RNZAF.

2000. I was introduced to Way of the Peaceful Warrior. Which changed my life.

2007. I started weekly study at Wellington’s School of Philosophy. This included readings and reflections on a variety of contemplative traditions as well as listening to recorded lectures on related teachings & topics made available through The School. This is where I started regular body scan and basic mindfulness sittings. Average weekly practice: 30 minutes, techniques; body scan & mindfulness.

2008. I was initiated into Transcendental Meditation (TM) through the School of Philosophy. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness, TM.

2009. Sat my first Vipassana 10-day retreat at Dhamma Medini in Auckland, NZ. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; vipassana, mindfulness, & body scan. Retreat practice time: 100 hours.

2010. I traveled around South America and as part of that spent 2 weeks on retreat in Samaipata, Bolivia, at Samapati Vihara Integral Dharma Centre. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness. Retreat practice time: 50 hours.

2011. Sat a shortened Vipassana retreat at Dhamma Medini in Auckland, NZ. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness. Retreat practice time: 30 hours.

2012. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness.

2013. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness.

2014. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness.

2015. Discovered guided meditation apps, Headspace in particular. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness, guided Headspace meditations.

2016. Average weekly practice: 60 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness, guided Headspace meditations.

2017. Increased my practice time by introducing some evening sittings in addition to morning regular practice. Average weekly practice: 90 minutes, techniques; body scan, mindfulness, guided Headspace meditations.

2018. Initiated mindfulness practice into the New Zealand Defence Force by pilot-trialling a mindfulness meditation programme.

Underwent training to deliver Mindfulness Based Attention Training (MBAT) at the University of Miami under Dr Amishi Jha and Dr Scott Rogers.

Sat a 5-day silent retreat under Jakob Leschly at Wangapeka Retreat Centre, Nelson, New Zealand.   

Average weekly practice: 120 minutes, body scan, mindfulness, guided Headspace meditations, 10% Happier guided meditations, Waking Up app by Sam Harris, Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society guided meditation. Retreat practice time: 30 hours.
